Straight answers to some very straight questions

My husband/boyfriend is against my having an abortion.
Making the decision to terminate a pregnancy can be difficult. If you do not think you are ready to handle the responsibilities of raising a child, you should not be forced to have a baby by your husband or boyfriend. Ideally you and your partner should come to a decision together, but in the end the choice is yours.

Will this affect my future ability to get pregnant?
In virtually every case, no. An abortion now will in no way prevent you from getting pregnant again and delivering healthy babies. The possibility of complications that can affect future fertility are less than 1 in 1000. However this is true only if procedure is done by an experienced certified Oby/Gyn medical doctor who knows how to do the procedure correctly and safely.

Are you legally certified to perform the procedure ?
Yes. The plain truth is that complications from abortions are much more likely in the hands of non-certified inexperienced people who don't know what to look for to prevent problems. I have the experience and the expertise to ensure that you are safe and feel little or no discomfort.

Will I be embarrassed coming to your Center?
No. You can arrive and leave with anonymity. We value your privacy

Is the procedure painful?
No. You will feel minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. We administer medications that help reduce anxiety and soften the cervix for the procedure, something most other clinics do not provide. After the procedure, we'll give you antibiotics and also pain killers. You might feel cramping like a heavy period. That's all.

What will my co-workers/family/children think?
First of all, there is no reason for them to know. This is a private decision by you and a private procedure. You need only take one day off from work in most cases. We do our utmost to protect the confidentiality of your visit.

Is a medical abortion safer than a surgical abortion?
Theoretically yes. But with an experienced physician, the risks are similar. The decision of which procedure is right for you is purely a personal choice. Medical abortion cannot be performed beyong a certain period of pregnancy. Here are a few pros and cons of each:

Ø Medical Abortion - is done mostly at home. There will be some discomfort as the procedure causes cramping. I will give you pain medication to reduce the discomfort as much as possible. You will pass the fetal tissue sometime within 48 hours of beginning the process. You do not have to take a day off from work and stay at our center for the 4 hours for a surgical abortion. In certain rare cases if bleeding persists then a surgical DNC need to be perfomed. An additional ultrasound test is required and a couple of mandatory follow ups are advised.

Ø Surgical Abortion - is done using dilatation and curettage . Your entire stay will be approximately 4 hours. You can return to work the next day. You will need an escort to accompany you and take you home afterwards.

My religion teaches that abortion is a sin.
Whatever your religion, it's likely that they also teach that God is forgiving and merciful. As humans, we are meant to make mistakes. We believe God forgives us for them and helps us learn from them as well.

Isn’t having an abortion a selfish choice?
How each woman feels about abortion is entirely up to her. It is important to remember that we each have very different backgrounds, including different parents, spiritual beliefs, friends, and personal experiences. The most important thing you can do is figure out for yourself if abortion feels like the right decision for YOU, and only you. Some women feel that NOT getting an abortion can be interpreted as a selfish choice. They say it is selfish to have a child when people simply don’t want to feel alone, or to prove to others that they are adults, or to make a partner prove their love. These reasons don’t take into account the needs and feelings of the unborn fetus, only the parents’. It is something to think about!

What about after the abortion?
A normal period should begin in 4-8 weeks. Ovulation can occur at any time after the abortion so birth control is needed to prevent pregnancy. If you are using birth control pills, a backup method is recommended for the first 4 weeks (one cycle) of pills.. To reduce risk of infection in the first 1-2 weeks after an abortion do not have intercourse or douche do not take a tub bath or go swimming avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting (over 15 pounds) avoid alcohol, aspirin and marijuana which may cause heavier bleeding do not use tampons until your next period If you experience heavy bleeding, call the clinic. Heavy bleeding is defined as when you soak a maxi-pad in less than one hour, for 2 hours in a row. Some women experience breast engorgement caused by the pregnancy hormones. This is normal. To help this go away, bind the breasts tightly with an ace bandage for several days. Do not touch or simulate the nipples (don't let water pound on them when taking a shower). Engorgement should go away within a few days to a week. Any stimulation such as touching will increase milk production.
